Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (250g)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder (15g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (2.5g)
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
  • 1/2 cup milk (120ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml)
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten (1)
Steps
  • 1

Step 1 Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • 2

Step 2 In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  • 3

Step 3 Add the cold butter cubes to the bowl. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • 4

Step 4 Create a well in the center of the mixture. Pour in the milk and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.

  • 5

Step 5 Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it a few times to bring it together.

  • 6

Step 6 Roll or pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle. Use a round biscuit cutter to cut out scones from the dough.

  • 7

Step 7 Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.

  • 8

Step 8 Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.

  • 9

Step 9 Serve warm with clotted cream and jam. Enjoy your homemade scones!
